pieces of Cake.

You know how it's different to read lyrics than it is to hear them played? I'm a fan of the band Cake. They've got a highly distinguishable sound, you know I like that. Something about each of their songs -- each one is audibly identifiable as a Cake song.

But on paper, each one is poetic. Makes me wonder if John McCrea is a poet and then a musician. Honestly, it does.

Here are some of his lines, some of Cake's lines. Tell me what you think.

"In a cd karaoke bar
By the banks of the mighty Bosphorus
Is a Japanese man in a business suit singing "smoke gets in your eyes"
And the muscular cyborg German dudes dance with sexy French Canadians
While the overweight Americans wear their patriotic jumpsuits" -- Wheels.

" Ringing stinging
Jerking like a nervous bird
Rattling up against his cage
Calls to me thoughout the day
See the feathers fly" -- No Phone

" In the brown shag carpet of a cheap motel
In the dark and dusty corner by the TV shelf
Is a small reminder of a simpler time
When a crumpled up pair of trousers cost a brand new dime" -- Dime

"I don't want to jump in
unless this music's thumping
all the dishes rattle in the cupboards
when the elephants arrive." -- Love You Madly

It makes me proud to read them.

Someone busier than you is running right now.

I have a confession to make to my spark buddy, Melissa: I did not go for a run last night. I'm terrible, I know. Here's what else I know: 1. I have never made such great progress in getting into shape as I did when I was jogging regularly. 2. My knee starts to stay in a constant state of noticeable discomfort after I've jogged for over a week. 3. I miss the liberating feeling of running. 4. I miss the empowerment of cross-training (biking, swimming, running) So I've been perusing the intarwebz for motivational media this morning. And while I hate Nike for their shoddy work ethic, jacked up prices, and apparently tiny clothes, I love them for their motivational material. I just have yet to find any media more inspiring to me than the following advertisements. And ... "I am addicted. I've collected footsteps before dawn. Seen places I never knew existed. Run to the moon and back. Been a rabbit for the neighborhood dogs. Obeyed the voice in my head. Let music carr...

I used to ... I want to ... I will.

I used to write all the time. I used to ride my bicycle. I used to do better about working out. I wonder what happened. It's too late at night to really make a change now, but I'm making the vow to change tomorrow. My life will be full of bike rides and writing in no time.
